CIO Insights: HR and Payroll Platforms

Selecting among the myriad of software providers for a particular process or business application is a key responsibility for many technology leaders and their respective organizations.

Working alongside their executive peers in Human Resources, CIOs/CTOs and the like are charged with ensuring that HRIS systems and their associated vendors align to both the business requirements of the company and integrate with minimal ongoing support from internal company resources.

A key element of an effective HRIS implementation is the selection of and HR/Payroll vendor and servicing partner.

In February 2021, The National CIO Review polled our 2000+ member CIO Professional Network of top technology leaders on the HR/Payroll system currently in use within their company.

With over 44% of technology leaders registering ADP as their current HR/Payroll partner, there is a clear leader in current implementations. However with Workday at 17% and UltiPro/Kronos at 15%, there is a competitive field working toward a capture of market share.

Across several providers, challenges were shared regarding initial implementation, integration, and technical support. And while ongoing customizations may be rare for some organizations, technology leaders are reporting that those can be slow to implement and require a hefty investment.

Regardless of the challenges or associated benefits, the CIO is charged with ensuring that these partnerships are a success. While payroll processing may not be classified as the most exciting element of a combined HR and Technology portfolio, issues with getting our valued employees paid on time has been the downfall of many a tech leader.

The ideal CIO-CHRO partnership needs to be mutually reinforcing, both teaching and learning from each other. The CHRO brings experience in traditional talent management, including acquisition, training, retention and compliance, while the CIO brings an in-depth understanding of enabling technology and digital transformation opportunities.
